Planning a Menu for Your Baby Shower

written by Ceinwyn Hart

Let’s face it, a party isn’t really a party unless there’s food. Everyone loves to gather around a plate of appetizers to munch and chat. But planning food for a baby shower can just seem like one more thing on an endless list, how will you ever get to it? Relax, there are many directions you can take your baby shower menu, from exotic to homey. Be creative with your menu, and don’t be afraid to experiment or deviate from the “norm”. Below are some ideas to get your wheels and cogs turning. Know that whatever you serve, your guests will be grateful that you’re filling their bellies and keeping them from a horrific fast food run after the baby shower.

Themed Food
If you are having a themed shower then it makes sense to have food that matches your theme. Say you’re having a baby around Chinese New Year, so that’s the theme of your shower. Well, you could have dim sum, egg flower soup (because eggs symbolize fertility), or tasty egg rolls. Having a themed party makes it much easier to plan your food because the direction for the party is already planned.

Sparkling Cider Brunch
Usually it’s a champagne brunch, but I like sparkling cider so mom-to-be can share in the sun. For this type of menu plan on having staples such as quiche and a fresh fruit salad. Also include some lunch staples, like cooked salmon perhaps. This type of sit down meal goes well with white linens and smaller baby showers where everyone can talk politely without having to shout to be heard.

Tea Party
If you’ve been playing tea party since you were a little girl then hosting one for your baby shower is an excellent idea. Tea is of course a staple, try strong teas like Earl Grey and chai, but also include herbal and fruity teas, like peppermint and blackberry. To go with your tea you’ll need tiny tea sandwiches like cucumber and dill or salmon and watercress, along with a plate of scones. A cheese and cracker plate would also go very well with this type of menu.

BBQ Time
If it’s summertime then a great choice for your baby shower menu is a barbeque. If you like kicking back and just having fun with homey foods, then a barbeque is great for you. Enjoy hamburgers, ribs, potato salad, and all of the other classic BBQ foods. Provide guests with lots of napkins though! In order to keep everyone cool try putting out some tasty punch, complete with ice rings filled with tiny frozen babies.

Potluck
Of course, if you don’t want to have to cater the even you can host a potluck baby shower. Simply ask each guest to bring a dish, and pin them down on what type they will be bringing. Do this so that you don’t end up with nothing but dessert or an entire table full of fruit salad. Potluck can be very fun for everyone, many guests will end up exchanging recipes, and you won’t have to worry as much about the food.

Whatever menu you do choose for your baby shower, know that everyone appreciates the effort that has gone into feeding them. Be ready for lots of complements and contented bellies; just make sure yours is one of them!
